Research was conducted among the Khoekhoen and descendants of the / Xam San with the purpose of contributing to ethnographic data on the water snake, one of the large snakes depicted in rock art. It was found that a substantial amount of information is still obtainable from the Khoekhoen and / Xam. Evidence indicates that the Water Snake was regarded as a symbol for water and therefore as a particularly potent phenomenon
