Namibia befindet sich zur Zeit politisch in einer Phase der Dekolonisierung von der Republik Südafrika (R ZA). Währungspolitisch ist Namibia ein defacto Mitglied in der sogenannten Rand Monetary Area (R M A), einem Währungsgebiet, in dem der südafrikanische Rand das gesetzliche Zahlungsmittel ist. Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung steht insbesondere Namibias Mitgliedschaft in der R M A und die Frage nach einer optimalen Währungspolitik für Namibia nach Erlangung der politischen Souveränität; sie ist nicht nur Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Diskussion, sondern auch Thema politischer Auseinandersetzung.
