During late February and March 1988, the Orange Free State experienced severe flooding as a result of heavy rainfall. Extensive damage was caused along the entire lower reaches of the Orange River from Douglas to the sea. The CS I R monitored the events at the river mouth. This article deals with the distribution of flood flows across the 1 km wide entrance, the morphological changes associated with it and an account of ecological impacts.
