This article tells the history of diamonds. Fluvial diamonds were washed down the Orange River end deposited along the Namibian coast millions of years ago and yet, a diamond is made of one of the most common elements on earth - pure carbon. The first stone in Namibia was picked up by Zacharias Lewala in April 1908 along the railway line between Aus and Lüderitz and handed to railway observer August Stauch, setting off a diamond rush which over time became the vital industry that has generated income for Namibia for a century
