The history of Australian exploration is studied with tales of rugged heroism. The North Australian Expedition of 1855-56, led by Augustus Gregory, though not lacking courage and endurance, was remarkable above all for the magnificent sketches, water-colours and oil paintings which Thomas Baines executed and brought back as a permanent record. Baines proved to be more than the mere artist-storeman Gregory had engaged. His energy, resourcefulness and willingness soon placed him ahead of his fellow 'officers' in the leader's estimation, and elevated him to the position of commander of the back-up party proved much more interesting and hazardous than Gregory's own trans-continental thousand-mile voyage in an open boat.
