The Omaruru Koppie has gaidut a reputation as being the setting for one of the toughest mountain-biking rides in Namibia and it has played a role in Namibian history, serving as a heliograph station during German colonial era, from 1902 until about 1906. Today this wilderness area is a haven for endangered species such as the dwarf python, and supports a rich bird and plant life
