Nine journeys in the South African countryside are described and illustrated in this book of travel. Four of them are taken in the western, southern and eastern Cape Province, while the rest pass through the Orange Free State, the Transvaal, Natal and a small section of Mozambique Territory. An attempt is made throughout, to acquaint the reader with surface form and underlying rock structure and composition. The history of river sculpture is given close attention and the evolution of coastlines is often referred to in attempting to unravel the surface history of the Union of South Africa.
