Mapping of the dome structures in the central zone of the Damaran orogen, Namibia, has shown a profound ductile shear zone, the Khan river detachment, separating the ∼1000 Ma granitic basement gneiss from the ∼550 Ma metamorphosed Damaran metasedimentary cover. The excursion was only concerned with the intracontinental branch which is divided into several ones which can be distinguished on the basis of stratigraphy, structure, grade of metamorphism and often aeromatic expression.
