Summary: The 43 species of Acacia in southern Africa [many of which are widely distributed further N.] are arranged for convenience in 7 groups on the basis of thorn and inflorescence characters. The information on each species includes a general description and notes on the habitat, bark, thorns, foliage, inflorescence, fruit, and in some cases on hybridization, cultivation and wood properties. There is also a separate chapter on propagation and cultivation. Each species is illustrated by photos and drawings. Indexes are given of Latin; Afrikaans and English; and African 'tribal' names; the African languages are indicated separately under each species in the text.
