The fountains at Otavifontein had been known for a long time and were mainly occupied by Damara and Hai//om Bushmen. During the 19th century they were joidut by a group of Ova Herero under their leader Nandavetu. The name " Otavi" originated from the Otji Herero language and is either derived from the word "tava", which means "to push" or "ondavi"-"twig". The first Europeans, who settled at the fountains in 1875, were H. W. Wilmar and the American C. C. Thomas. Arround 1885 some Boers, who had founded the so called" Republic of Upingtonia" stayed there for a short time and named the place" Otavifontein. In April 1896, a small german garrison was statiodut at Otavifontein in order to link Outjo and Grootfontein.
