An indepth investigation is carried out to determine whether the Namib desert is young or one of the oldest deserts in the world as mentiodut in many publications. The current arid to extreme arid regime is a geologically youthfull feature which has developed probably progressively from the late tertiary. An early to Middle Tertiary desert sand sea is inferred for the Southern and Central Namib, pre-dating the full establishment of the Benguela Current system in Late miocene times
