Summary: Originally the Cardinal Woodpecker was divided into two species and no less than ten subspecies. Once material was combidut from various regions a detailed study revealed that only five races against ten admitted by Roberts were worthy of continued recognition. As far as Namibia is concerdut 82 speciments were examidut from Helmeringhausen and right up to Swartbooisdrift and the Cunene River. A map included of Southern Africa indicates the distribution of the different species
