Summary: The thesis scrutinises a largely forgotten part of Namibia's history, namely the use of concentration camps between 1904-1908, in the time of the Herero and Nama anti-colonial wars. Although the scope of the thesis is the sum of concentration camps that were scattered around the colony, the thesis uses the most infamous of the camps, Shark Island off the coast of Lüderitz, as a case study. Different aspects such as forced labour, treatment, overall conditions and anatomy of Shark Island in particular are therefore studied as these relate to and compare with the wider context of Namibia's concentration camps in general
