Summary: The purpose of this paper is to describe the intraspecific variability in home range size and the dynamic nature of home ranges throughout the year. A standardized method is presented for data collection and analysis. The emphasis is to maximize data obtaidut while minimizing disturbance to the animals. The object is not to secure a few precise estimates, but to obtain a general index of magnitude of movements for the population at given points in time. These data can be used to evaluate the role of movement and spacing patterns in determining behavioural interactions within small mammal communities
