Dr. Henno Martin is rated as the most outstanding personality in Namibian geology. He is internationally known for the book: '' The sheltering desert" which describes the ordeals of hiding for two and a half years in the Namib Desert. As an outstanding scientist he laid the foundation of the present understanding of Namibian geology. Windhoek is profitting from the boreholes he selected for the towns water supply. He compiled the first 1:1 000 000 scale geological map of the country. Also from his hand was published the '' The Precambrian Geology of South West Africa and Namaqualand'' which is the bible for all geologists. To commemorate Henno Martin and to honour geologists who have contributed in an outstanding manner to the understanding of Namibian geology, the Geological Society of Namibia has decided to award the Henno Martin Medal on an annual basis
