Observations with ostriches provided some interesting data. An average of 4 females are grouped around one male. A female lays about 20 eggs, taking two days per egg. Thus the females also lay their eggs in other nests to spread the hatching delays amongst breeding females. They can cover 20 eggs thus the remaining eggs are grouped around them so that predators concentrate on these eggs enabeling the hatching of at least a few young ones
