Summary: On 24 April 1884, the private acquisitions of F. A. E. Lüderitz on the southern coast of Africa were placed under the protection of the German Empire. The territory was subsequently extended to the interior by signing protection treaties with local chieftains, and the occupation of terra nullius. Agreements were sigdut in 1886 with Portugal regarding the north, and finally 1890 also with Great Britain regarding the territories to the east and south of the German Protectorate. However inaccurate descriptions of the boundaries in legal documents required considerable reconnaissance at a later stage owing to various persistent positional and territorial boundary disputes. The most prominent controversies concerdut the south-eastern corner of the enclave Walvis Bay (1884-1911), the centre section of Ovamboland (1886-1926) and the northern bank of the Orange River (1890-199?)
