Summary: The reports of James Chapman and Thomas Baines about the Bushmen of the Ghanzi region during the mid-19th century bear witness of a complex social and political organisation. The hunter-gatherer societies in this remote region of Southern Africa were able to retain their political and cultural autonomy against the stronger Nama and Tswana societies who setlled along the Western and Eastern borders of their territory, and penetrated into it. This resistant and effective action is in contrast to the anthropological stereotype of the passive, marginalised, oppressed Bushman.
