Summary: Although meat and milk are often thought of as the most important mainstays in the Ova Himba diet, this is a conceptual illusion. They are the most desired, but the least consumed. Maize is unquestionably the most important staple in the Himba diet. Its cultivation and preparation are considered to be singularly female activities, which contributes to the low status of maize as a food.
