In 1866 the Eureka diamond was discovered in South Africa and in 1869 diamonds were discovered near Hopetown. In 1969 Dr. Gavin Lamont and geologist for de Beers James Gibson discovered kimberlite south of the Makgadikgadi Pan in northern Botswana. Two pipes with diamonds were found. Then Manfred Marks discovered a traverse in Orapa west of Letlhakane. Here the second largest diamond pipe in the world was discovered, larger than the Mwandui pipe in Tanzania. In addition large nickel deposits were made
